Hi, Remodelaholics!  I’m Lauren from Bless’er House, and I am so excited to be a new contributor for 2015!
As a guest last month, I shared with y’all my Statement-Making Faux Fireplace for Under $600, and I’m happy to show you guys a much more simple DIY today for dressing up those rusty metal folding chairs many of us have hanging around are garages and basements.
We always pull ours out when we have lots of guests, so it only makes sense to dress them up a bit, right?

We had inherited our 8 folding chairs from my grandmother, who I’m pretty sure had bought them in the 1970s.  They’ve probably attended more family gatherings than I have.

I can embrace orange sometimes, but I stray away from that hue when it comes to my home decor.

How to Paint a Folding Chair

To keep this project as budget-friendly as possible, I mainly stuck to using supplies I had in my stash:
  • Spray primer
  • Spray paint (for mine, I chose Rust-oleum Heirloom White)
  • Painters tape
  • Light gray flat paint (I used Valspar Montpellier Ashlar Gray that I already had on hand.)
  • A small sponge brush

I cleaned off all of the icky cobwebs and dust on the chairs first before I gave them a light coat of the spray primer.

The primer really helped with any stubborn rusty spots.  After they were dry, I gave them two light coats of the Heirloom White.

To get the stripe effect, I used the painters tape in the middle of the chair back and seat.

And then painted a coat of the Montpellier Ashlar Gray with the sponge brush. (Helpful tip: Pounce the brush on the tape, don’t swipe, to get a more crisp line.)

I could have bought some skinny painters tape to create the thin lines, but I only had the wide kind.  And, hey, who doesn’t like keeping projects as cheap as possible?

I painted on the thin lines next.

And once the stripes were dry, I had some much nicer looking chairs.

Ahhh much better!  They fit in with the rest of our house’s decor, and I don’t cringe every time we have to pull them out of the garage when we have lots of company.

The whole process really was so easy.  I can’t believe I hadn’t done it sooner!  Spray paint can do some amazing things.
Do you maybe have some old folding chairs that could use a little love too?
Blessings,
Lauren
